AC is an electrical current, or flow of charge, that periodically changes direction, hence it’s name ‘alternating current’. DC (Direct Current) is the opposite, where the electrical current moves in a straight line.
Because AC power can be transported over long distances, most the world’s electricity grid uses AC. However, a battery can only store DC power. To store AC power into a battery, a converter needs to change the electricity from AC to DC. When an electric vehicle is charged with an AC charger, this conversion happens inside the electric vehicle.
